Topsy-Turvy Thursday – Your Wedding Gift Questions Answered

Is it ok to veer off of the bridal registry?

Absolutely!  The registry is merely a guideline to make gift shopping a bit easier.  If there is something else you would like to purchase for the bride and groom go right ahead!  I’m sure it will be a nice surprise for the couple.  However, I would suggest at least taking a look at their registry to get a feel for their personal style.

How long after the wedding is it appropriate to send a gift?

According to most etiquette books and teachers it is ok to send a gift up to a year after the wedding, however, I disagree.  I don’t think you should wait longer than a month or two after the wedding.

Is cash ever an appropriate wedding gift?

Some people like, and prefer, to send cash or gift cards as a wedding gift.  In my opinion, money is a hard thing to send because it means different things to different people.  To some it may seem like a totally impersonal gift and then others may really love it.  It’s hard to gauge, but I tend to advise my clients not to send moneysince there really is no standard amount of money that’s acceptable as a wedding gift.
