If you do any type of physical activity, such as running or aerobics, you should definitely be wearing a sports bra. Constant, jarring, up and down movement from those activities puts a strain on your breast tissue that will cause damage as you age. And the form of “damage” I am talking about it sagging. Yuck! No one wants to have sagging breasts, so the best way to prevent it is to wear an appropriate sports bra during every work out. Unfortunately, frequent washing and everyday wear can really take a toll on the elasticity of a sports bra so it’s imperative you know the warning signs of when you need to buy a new one.
- Check for resistance. If you don’t feel enough resistance when you tug a bit on the fabric, you may need to get a new one. You should also be able to tell when the resistance of your sports bra starts to give way when you put it on. Notice how snuggly it holds your breasts in place. If you feel too much movement while exercising, it’s definitely time to purchase a new bra.
- Make a physical comparison to a new bra that is of similar if not the same style. If the shoulder straps are longer and more stretched out than the new bra it could be a sign. Check around the band of your sports bra, as well. Is it stretched or worn out?
- Do you think you’ve worn that sports bra more than 100 times? That’s about as long as a sports bra should last. After 100 wears it’s best to toss it and start over.
Now all you have to do is hit the gym! Good luck!
